Davon merkt man heutzutage nicht mehr viel, denn der Platz ist seit Jahren eine verkehrsberuhigte Zone. Zu Anfang wurde der Marienplatz allerdings nur schlicht als Marktplatz bezeichnet. Im 18. Jahrhundert wurde der Name dann in Schrannenplatz umgeändert, bis schließlich im Jahre 1854 die endgültige Umbenennung in das heutige erfolgte.

The Autobahn 8, A8, runs from Stuttgart-Munich and the A9 between Nuernberg and Munich, which is also considered to be one of the busier roads in the area. When driving near or around the urban center there are several parking garages available, the biggest one located at the Munich Hauptbahnhof.
