Der Platz ist so alt wie die Stadt selber und existierte bereits im Jahre 1158. Seine wichtige Bedeutung verdankt der Ort alleine schon der Tatsache, dass sich auf ihm zwei wichtige Verkehrsachsen der Stadt vereinen. Davon merkt man heutzutage nicht mehr viel, denn der Platz ist seit Jahren eine verkehrsberuhigte Zone. Zu Anfang wurde der Marienplatz allerdings nur schlicht als Marktplatz bezeichnet. Im 18. Jahrhundert wurde der Name dann in Schrannenplatz umgeändert, bis schließlich im Jahre 1854 die endgültige Umbenennung in das heutige erfolgte.
