Davon merkt man heutzutage nicht mehr viel, denn der Platz ist seit Jahren eine verkehrsberuhigte Zone. Zu Anfang wurde der Marienplatz allerdings nur schlicht als Marktplatz bezeichnet. Im 18. Jahrhundert wurde der Name dann in Schrannenplatz umgeändert, bis schließlich im Jahre 1854 die endgültige Umbenennung in das heutige erfolgte.
