Jahrhundert wurde der Name dann in Schrannenplatz umgeändert, bis schließlich im Jahre 1854 die endgültige Umbenennung in das heutige erfolgte.

Mehr über die Geschichte der Stadt können Besucher auch am Marienplatz 21 erfahren. An dieser Adresse steht das einzig erhaltene Gebäude aus der Vorkriegszeit. Ein weiteres Baudenkmal am Platz ist die Mariensäule, aufgestellt zu Ehren der Schutzpatronin.
