Als Herzstück von München ist das Gebiet natürlich auch ein wichtiger Veranstaltungsort. Alljährlich finden auf ihm der Münchner Christkindlmarkt oder die Feierlichkeiten des Traditionsvereins FC Bayern München statt. Auch historisch hat der Platz etliche Besonderheiten zu bieten. Dazu gehört das Alte Rathaus, welches Anfang des 14. Jahrhunderts erbaut wurde. Bis zum Jahre 1874 hatte der Magistrat der Stadt München hier seinen Sitz und noch heute wird der wunderschöne, gotische Saal bei Empfängen oder anderen Feierlichkeiten genutzt. Mehr über die Geschichte der Stadt können Besucher auch am Marienplatz 21 erfahren. An dieser Adresse steht das einzig erhaltene Gebäude aus der Vorkriegszeit. Ein weiteres Baudenkmal am Platz ist die Mariensäule, aufgestellt zu Ehren der Schutzpatronin.
Fast schon als Herzstück des Münchner Zentrums kann der Marienplatz bezeichnet werden, der über die Jahre hinweg viele Namen gehabt hat. Besonders ist alleine schon die Lage inmitten der Münchner Altstadt, zwischen Karlstor und Isartor, gesäumt von Hotels, Restaurants und historischen Gebäuden. Hier trifft Geschichte auf modernes Lebensgefühl und gerade in den Sommermonaten spielt sich das Leben hier im Freien ab. Der Platz ist so alt wie die Stadt selber und existierte bereits im Jahre 1158. Seine wichtige Bedeutung verdankt der Ort alleine schon der Tatsache, dass sich auf ihm zwei wichtige Verkehrsachsen der Stadt vereinen. Davon merkt man heutzutage nicht mehr viel, denn der Platz ist seit Jahren eine verkehrsberuhigte Zone. Zu Anfang wurde der Marienplatz allerdings nur schlicht als Marktplatz bezeichnet. Im 18. Jahrhundert wurde der Name dann in Schrannenplatz umgeändert, bis schließlich im Jahre 1854 die endgültige Umbenennung in das heutige erfolgte.
