In einem Bürgerentscheid stimmten die Münchner ab, dass im Stadtgebiet kein Hochhaus mehr gebaut werden dürfe, das höher als die knapp 100 Meter hohen Türme der Frauenkirche sei. Eine weitere Kirche, die zu den Monumenten in München zählt, ist die Pfarrkirche St. Peter, im Volksmund Alter Peter genannt und ist die älteste Kirche der Stadt. Der Platz, auf dem der Alte Peter heute steht, gilt als der erste Siedlungskern der Stadt. Die Klimaanlage war ausgefallen (ausgerechnet in der heissesten Zeit). Das Hotel hat direkt angeboten, uns als Wiedergutmachung das Frühstück zu offerieren. Beim Auschecken mussten wir zudem nichts für den Parkplatz und die Getränke aus der Minibar bezahlen. Das war mehr als kulant und eine sehr positive Überraschung. Das Personal war sehr freundlich und zuvorkommend. Das Frühstück war sehr reichhaltig und schön präsentiert.

Nach einer ausgiebigen Tour locken etliche gastronomische Highlights. Direkt am Platz liegt beispielsweise eines der ältesten Gasthäuser der bayerischen Metropole. Das Restaurant Zum Spöckmeier wurde bereits im Jahre 1450 eröffnet und verfügt sogar über eine eigene Metzgerei. Auf der Speisekarte stehen bayerische, teils unbekannte Spezialitäten, wobei natürlich nicht die Original Münchner Weißwürste fehlen dürfen. Ein weiteres Highlight am Platzl, wie ihn die Münchner auch gerne nennen, ist das Hofbräuhaus Augustiner. Auf der Karte stehen hauseigene Bierspezialitäten und Gerichte aus der Küche Bayerns.

Als Herzstück von München ist das Gebiet natürlich auch ein wichtiger Veranstaltungsort. Alljährlich finden auf ihm der Münchner Christkindlmarkt oder die Feierlichkeiten des Traditionsvereins FC Bayern München statt. Auch historisch hat der Platz etliche Besonderheiten zu bieten. Dazu gehört das Alte Rathaus, welches Anfang des 14. Jahrhunderts erbaut wurde. Bis zum Jahre 1874 hatte der Magistrat der Stadt München hier seinen Sitz und noch heute wird der wunderschöne, gotische Saal bei Empfängen oder anderen Feierlichkeiten genutzt. Mehr über die Geschichte der Stadt können Besucher auch am Marienplatz 21 erfahren. An dieser Adresse steht das einzig erhaltene Gebäude aus der Vorkriegszeit. Ein weiteres Baudenkmal am Platz ist die Mariensäule, aufgestellt zu Ehren der Schutzpatronin.
